Kitchen Upgrade

I am finding that I actually enjoy cooking and baking (there is a discernible difference). That means that I am finding myself more and more in the kitchen, however, I have not recently been happy with the look of the kitchen. Being a renter, we there is very little that we can do to the walls, or cabinets, or floors...doesnt give me all that much to change. But I'll work with what I can. Today I had a day off from subbing and working on some kitchen decor, both floor mats, a curtain, and few wall decor changes were made. Here is the before...
And below is the after, I know they do not look too much different, but I feel better vibes in there already! (Okay, so after posting them side by side like this, it really doesn't look much different, but I swear to you, its much more appealing! haha)

DIY Decorative Floor Mats.

I was having a really hard time finding decorative mats that were a reasonable price, so why not make my own. With some fabric from Joann's Fabric Store, two mats from Bed Bath & Beyonds clearance asile, some adhesive spray, and tape...I finally found what I was looking for.
1. Floor mat, old or new, decorated or plain, it really doesn't matter.

You will need, Adhesive Spray Glue

2. Measure out the fabric to your mat, I left about 2 inches to fold over and glue down. Spray glue on the top of your mat and then sit evenly on fabric, gluey side down of course!

3. Spray Glue along the sides, fold up and press down.

4. Trim you corners so the underside of your mat is not bulky or uneven.

5. Repeat on all four sides and corners.

6. The tape is optional, I used it just to be safe, it also will keep the edges from fraying.

7. Done and beautiful, not to mention one of a kind!

This one is in front of my sink.

This one is in front of my oven. :)

Simple as that, I know you're thinking, why haven't I already done this? Everyone wants pretty things to stand on while they slave away in the kitchen! So go, get off you patooshi and do it. Because the mat already has traction, it doesnt slide around very much at all, but it you want some extra stick, try caulking around the bottom, along the edge of the fabric, I think that would give it a better grip.
Break down: $4.99 for each mat, fabric $6.00 a yard, glue & tape (I already had at the house)
Todays Kitchen Mat Total: $10.99 for two unique and just my style floor mats!
. . . . . . . . . . .

Alright, so for the curtain...my deepest aplogies, I was going crazy with the crafting and forgot to take pictures. (AHHH, I'm sorry, so sorry, I apologize a hundred times...) I will try to find the link and post it below from the website I saw the idea from. --Wah-la, found it: Johns Journal - Maria

I think it turned out pretty good, in the tutorial, they use hot glue... I used no sew hem tape, that you place between the fabric and then iron to stick, I thought it looked more clean and neat. (Not to mention smoother than hot glue, or burning your friggin' finger tips off!)

All DONE!

  1. So cute Mal! I may have to get crafting with these mats! I've seen some different ones on Pinterest but the way you did this was so easy-peasy! Love it :)

  2. Thanks Brandi! They were super easy as you can see!! And bonus: I think if you are careful, when the fabric gets dirty, you take the fabric off you can wash it and then re apply it!
